FAQ

Answering all of your questions, hopefully. Well maybe most of them.

WHAT'S WITH THE NAME?

The name was inspired by the friendship between our dog, Minnow, and our first llama, Badger. They were best buds until Badger passed away in 2023. Our animals are part of our life story, so we wanted to honor them all. Plus it's fun to say.

All of our llamas are registered (yes, llama registration is a thing) under the BLHF farm name, also.

DO YOU USE LLAMA MILK IN YOUR SOAP?

Ehhhh no. Have you ever tried to milk a llama? They don't produce like goats or cows, either, so there's not a lot to spare.

HOW DO YOU MAKE SOAP?

This is the number one question I get. I use the cold process method and basically mix a bunch of oils, lye, fragrance, and micas together and pour it in a mold. I use the hot process method for shaving soap. Anyone can learn to make soap - it's kind of like baking meets chemistry.

Once it's poured and cut, soap has to cure for 6 weeks to a year, depending on the recipe. So it's a waiting game.

WHAT OILS DO YOU USE?

I use several kinds of oils and butters in my recipes, but my most common include: olive, sustainable palm, beef tallow, lard, castor, apricot kernel, rice bran, cocoa butter, mango butter, and shea butter. All of my products have an ingredient label. Some combinations of oils and butters can make a recipe move faster or slower, so the ones chosen for a specific bar are generally based on the overall soap design that is in my head (that may or may not come to fruition).

For lotions, I formulate using oils with slightly different properties since these interact with the skin longer, such as argan and jojoba.

HOW DO I SEND A GIFT?

Make your selections and change the shipping address to your recipient. In the "leave us a note" block on the checkout page, let me know this is a gift and write a personalized note for your recipient. I'll copy it word for word and put it in their package.

The packaging will be spot-on and they will know it's a gift from you.

DO YOU MAKE FELTIES WITH LLAMA WOOL?

Not usually - it doesn't felt extremely well. I have a bunch of it when we shear everyone every-other year though. I could use it for top coats but only do that if I need a long top coat. I generally use sheep's wool (some of which I source from my good friend at Lovely Valley Wool - check them out!).

WHAT ABOUT THE CAT HAIR?

It's a joke, friends. I have a house full of animals and I clean everything prior to creating. You might find a special gift from one of my critters in the box or something because pet hair is pretty much a condiment in the house, but I keep my workspace very clean and disinfected!
